Sculptra Lasts Longer than a Hollywood Marriage

Dermal Fillers San Diego, CAIf you’re here in Dr. Kearney’s blog, you probably know a little about the aging process and collagen. Collagen is a protein that is responsible for the structure that supports the skin. When we are young and our bodies are producing lots of collagen, the skin is firm, taut, and has few wrinkles.

But then for some dumb quirk of evolution, after the age of 20, our bodies produce one additional percentage point less collagen every year. When you reach 50, your collagen production is now down 30%! The fact that you develop lines, sagging cheeks, and creases is no more a surprise than the 2/5 favorite winning at Del Mar!

Sculptra, a dermal filler, aims to replace some of that missing collagen. Dr. Kearney uses Sculptra to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds.

What is Sculptra?

With just about all fillers results are instant. The gel is injected and it “fills” the wrinkle from beneath, pushing the skin back up.

Sculptra is different; its results are not immediate. This filler is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which works within the skin to replace lost collagen. Sculptra is the first facial injectable that gives you subtle results over time as collagen is replaced. This makes for a natural-looking appearance that improves over time, not an instant change as with other fillers. Dr. Kearney usually recommends two to four injection sessions over a few months for the best results. These results can then last for over two years!

How does Sculptra work?

Sculptra is injected into the deep dermal layer of the skin. Microparticles of PLLA work within the deep dermis to rebuild lost collagen and provide structural skin support. As the PLLA is absorbed a collagen framework is created. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness to shallow to deep wrinkles and folds.

Where is Sculptra effective?

Sculptra is effective for:

  • The lines framing your mouth (parentheses and marionette lines)
  • Deep folds between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds), also called smile lines
  • Chin wrinkles
