To Regain Youthful Breasts, Come Visit Us in La Jolla

A woman’s breasts can lose skin elasticity and sag due to a variety of reasons, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, aging, genetics, and gravity. To regain a more youthful breast profile, undergoing a breast lift in San Diego, CA may be the solution for you. Dr. Robert Kearney proudly serves patients in San Diego, La Jolla, and surrounding areas across California.

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure that “lifts” the breasts to a more desirable position. The procedure involves removal of excess skin and tightening of the surrounding tissue to reshape the breasts and support the new contour.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for a Breast Lift in San Diego?

If you have sagging breast tissue due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, aging, gravity, and genetics may want to consider the procedure. It is also recommended for women with large nipple-areolar complexes that point downward. Women who are happy with the size of their breasts, but not with their appearance, may also be good candidates for a breast lift.

Many women choose to undergo breast augmentation in conjunction with a breast lift, especially if their breasts have lost volume. This procedure is known as “augmentation mastopexy.”

What Can I Expect During the Breast Lift Procedure?

During your initial consultation with Dr. Kearney, your incision options will be discussed. In a concentric lift, the incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex. This technique lifts the breast and reduces the size of the nipples. The concentric lift is recommended for patients with minimal breast sagging.

In a standard lift, the incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex and runs vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease beneath the breast and then horizontally along the breast crease. This type of incision is called the “anchor” incision and is usually a good option for patients who have a significant amount of breast sagging or those with nipples that point downward.

Your breast lift may also be a mix of the two lift methods. This option is best for patients with moderate sagging. The result of this breast lift technique is a “lollipop” type scar.

During the procedure, excess skin is removed and the breast is reshaped. The nipple-areolar complex is positioned higher on the chest. If desired, a breast implant may be placed through the incision to regain lost breast volume. The nipples and areolas will remain attached in order to preserve sensation and breast-feeding ability. Surgery is usually an outpatient procedure utilizing general anesthesia. It takes between one and three hours, depending on the type of lift performed.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for a Breast Lift?

The best candidates for a breast lift are patients with breast sagging due to weight loss, pregnancy, or the natural aging process. They are also in good health, understand the risks associated with the procedure and also have realistic expectations of what a breast lift can do.

Will a Breast Lift Increase My Bra Size?

Breast lifts are performed to remove excess skin and reposition the breasts. Patients who want to increase their cup size may choose to undergo breast enhancement with implants.

Is Recovery Painful?

It is not uncommon to experience swelling, bruising and discomfort after a breast lift. In many cases, patients can use over-the-counter medications to reduce pain and swelling. Your surgeon may also prescribe other pain medications to take immediately after surgery to help keep you as comfortable as possible.

How Do I Prepare for My Breast Lift?

As with any type of surgical procedure, there are ways to prepare to ensure the best possible outcome. Proper consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon, one who specializes in breast lifts and augmentation, is the first step. During consultation, Dr. Kearney will perform a physical examination and discuss your aesthetic goals. He will answer any questions you may have and advise if a breast lift is right for you.
