Have you ever looked in the mirror, or seen yourself in a picture, and wondered what happened to all of your hair? You are not alone! Millions of men and women around the world suffer the effects of male and female pattern baldness, hair loss and/or thinning hair. The wonderful thing is that you now no longer have to live with thinning hair. Dr. Kearney offers hair transplant services in San Diego CA that are so technologically advanced that the only people who will know you have had the procedure done are you and the people you tell.
Prior to the availability of NeoGraft, many people decided to forgo hair transplant procedures because they were either not suitable candidates for the traditional “strip method” of hair restoration, or because the cons outweighed the pros. They did not find the linear scar at the back of the head, the significant amount of post-operative pain, the slow recovery time, or the loss of feeling at the incision site to be acceptable.
After considerable research and training, Dr. Kearney has chosen to offer a hair transplant method that involves the removal of individual hair follicles from the scalp in their naturally occurring groupings of 1-4 hairs. The follicles are then placed in the areas of the scalp where balding has occurred. This is commonly referred to as the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method. Dr. Kearney is utilizing the NeoGraft Automated Hair Transplant system to perform this method of hair restoration treatment.
What is NeoGraft?
NeoGraft creates natural-looking hair growth using the patient’s own follicles. This revolutionary hair transplantation system uses controls to precisely extract complete individual hair follicles which can be immediately transplanted to the selected areas of the scalp. The systems extracts individual follicles (which have groups of 1-4 hairs in each) from the back of the head and then implants them to the selected transplant area on the top or front of the scalp.
This “no touch” method better preserves the hair follicles to ensure that more of them successfully survive in the transplanted area.
A natural-looking head of hair is created with this minimally-invasive hair transplant procedure, unlike the traditional “strip method” where the patient is left with a linear scar on the back of the head.

Who is the ideal candidate for NeoGraft hair transplantation?
FUE transplantation requires that the patient still has hair growing on the lower back of his or her scalp so a patient who is completely bald would not be a candidate for this procedure. The functioning follicles will be transplanted from the back of the head into the thinning or bald areas on the top or front of the scalp.
It is best to begin these procedures when you are first thinning, rather than waiting until the donor site doesn’t have enough follicles to extract.
Why Choose NeoGraft Hair Restoration?
The NeoGraft system is the first and only FDA cleared follicular unit harvesting and implantation system. The NeoGraft system delivers automation of the FUE technique, the most advanced technology in the hair transplant industry.
This revolutionary system uses pneumatic controls to precisely extract complete individual hair follicles which can be immediately transplanted to the selected areas of the scalp. The NeoGraft automated hair transplant system is the only complete harvesting system on the market and has the only ‘NO TOUCH’ implantation technology.
Hair Restoration with NeoGraft technology provides absolute exact harvesting and placement, delivering repeatable results. With NeoGraft’s technology, each follicle is removed individually while the patient is comfortable. A natural looking head of hair is created with this minimally-invasive hair transplant procedure.
Hair loss can be a very emotional part of the natural aging process and seek ways to curb this process used to be a challenge. NeoGraft’s advanced technology offers a discrete solution to hair loss, allowing patients to achieve natural looking results with no linear scar, minimal downtime and a shorter recovery period. Hair restoration with the NeoGraft procedure is unnoticeable, making it your secret to tell.

How is NeoGraft hair transplantation done performed?
The first step is to shave the back of the patient’s head. This area on the back of the head is resistant to pattern balding so the hair follicles there are still viable. The area is then numbed topically. We use the NeoGraft® Automated Hair Transplantation system for both extraction and transplantation. The system extracts the hairs from the donor site, which consist of 1-4 hairs per follicle, with a gentle pneumatic process that ensures the hairs will have a better chance of being successfully transplanted. The follicles are then pulled up into the storage chamber.
Once enough hair has been harvested, we transplant the hair using the NeoGraft® “no touch” implantation method. This propriety method doesn’t use a scalpel. Instead, the NeoGraft® instrument makes the holes at the optimum depth in the area that is balding, and then the hairs are inserted into these holes.
Benefits of the FUE Hair Transplant Method
The FUE hair transplant method is a very safe, minimally invasive, relatively minor procedure. There is minimal bleeding and fewer complications than with the “strip” method. The procedure is performed with local anesthetic and no intravenous or intra-muscular sedation is required. Patients experience minimal discomfort, no scalpel incision, no sutures, no linear scar and quick recovery times.
The NeoGraft Automated FUE hair transplant method is also a useful procedure to fix visible linear scars from previous “strip” surgeries. FUE can be used to ‘fill in’ or camouflage those old scars by transplanting new follicles into the area.

NeoGraft FAQs
How do I prepare for a NeoGraft procedure?
No preparation is necessary other than avoiding aspirin products for several days prior to the procedure. It makes the process easier if you have a haircut that is relatively short, but Dr. Kearney can talk with you about your individual situation during your consultation. We shave the donor areas, so short hair blends in better afterwards.
When will the hair start to grow?
Once your NeoGraft transplantation is done, the transplanted area will show some redness and may feel tender. You will be able to see the individual spots where the hair has been transplanted. Over the few weeks some of the newly transplanted hair will fall out but that doesn’t mean the follicles have failed to take. It’s simply the reaction to the trauma of the transplant. The hair follicles then then settle in and return to the anagen (growth) phase. You should start seeing new growth within a few months but it can take 6-12 months to see the full amount of hair growth.
Is hair transplantation painful?
One of the reasons Dr. Kearney opted for the NeoGraft system is patient comfort. We numb both the donor and recipient areas, so patients feel little during the procedure. After your session, your scalp will be tender, and may need some pain medication for few days. For the first couple of days you’ll have bandages on the treated areas, and you’ll receive antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications to calm irritation. Compared to strip harvesting and even the use of scalpels,, the NeoGraft system is far more comfortable and recovery is much easier.
Will my transplanted hair look natural?
Dr. Kearney believes the NeoGraft system creates truly natural-looking hair growth which is why he’s had it done himself! The pattern of your desired hairline is carefully discussed with your team ahead of time so everyone is on the same page. Since the transplanted hair is simply from the back of your scalp it looks completely natural and blends in with the rest of the hair on your head.
Will I need more than one transplantation session?
During your consultation with Dr. Kearney, the two of you will discuss how much hair you want to return to the thinning areas. Once you understand the system, you may seek to have a second session down the road. Thiswould allow you to better keep up with hair thinning, or you may simply want more hair transplanted in order to show a thicker, fuller result.
Are my hair transplantation results permanent?
There is about a 90% “take” rate with the NeoGraft system, meaning that most of the hair transplanted will grow in the desired area. These follicles come from the back of the head, an area resistant to pattern balding, so they have a high success rate. This is a permanent change.
That said, if the area is thinning, that process will continue as the original hairs that are susceptible to pattern balding will stop growing hair. If that’s the case thenyou can have more hair transplanted to keep pace with the balding.
How long does a typical NeoGraft procedure take?
The length of a NeoGraft procedure varies depending on the number of grafts. On average, the process can take anywhere from four to eight hours. Patients are typically comfortable and can take breaks as needed.
What should I wear on the day of my NeoGraft procedure?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, preferably with a button-up or zip-up top. This makes it easier to remove without disturbing the transplanted area after the procedure. Avoid wearing pull-over shirts or tight collars.
Can I eat or drink before my NeoGraft procedure?
Yes, you should eat a light meal before arriving. Since the procedure can take several hours, having a meal is important to maintain your energy levels. You can drink water, but avoid alcohol and caffeine on the day of the surgery.
Should I wash my hair before coming in for the procedure?
Yes, wash your hair thoroughly the morning of the procedure using a gentle shampoo. Avoid using hair products like gels, sprays, or oils, as your scalp needs to be clean.
What should I bring with me to the clinic on the procedure day?
Bring a comfortable pillow, snacks, water, and entertainment (like a book, headphones, or a tablet) since the procedure can take several hours.
What is the recovery time after NeoGraft?
Most patients resume light activities within a day or two. Full recovery usually takes about one to two weeks, during which patients may experience mild swelling, redness, or scabbing in the treated area. These symptoms typically subside within a week. Avoid doing anything strenuous for about two weeks to prevent irritation or damage to the transplant area.
How should I care for the transplanted area after the surgery?
Proper aftercare is crucial for optimal results:
- Keep the area clean and follow Dr. Kearney's instructions on gently washing your scalp.
- Avoid touching, rubbing, or scratching the transplanted area.
- Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights to reduce swelling.
- Apply any prescribed topical medications as directed.
- Avoid direct sun exposure, and don't use hair products for at least a week.
- Wear a loose hat if you need to protect the area outdoors.
- Follow post-op care instructions provided by your surgeon to ensure proper healing.
Can I wash my hair after NeoGraft? If so, when?
Yes, you can wash your hair after NeoGraft, but typically not for the first 48 hours. After this period, you may gently rinse the area with lukewarm water.
