Mommy Makeover in La Jolla & Carlsbad

Need Mommy Makeover Surgery?

procedures1 The process of becoming a mother is a satisfying experience. Unfortunately, what pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding have done to your body is less than satisfying, to say the least. Dr. Kearney provides the solution with a mommy makeover, which lets moms regain their beautiful figure and their confidence.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a term given to a combination of procedures that addresses the areas of the body that are most affected by pregnancy and childbirth. Dr. Kearney will create a customized plan based on the patient’s specific needs.

A mommy makeover typically involves liposuction, a tummy tuck, and breast surgery (breast augmentation and lift).

Who is a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover Procedure?

Women with stretched abdominal skin and muscles, excess fat deposits in certain areas of the body, and sagging breasts are good candidates for a mommy makeover. Potential patients need to be in good overall physical and emotion health, and have realistic goals and expectations for the various procedures. The easiest way to know if you are a good candidate for a mommy makeover is to come in for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Kearney.

What Can I Expect During the Mommy Makeover Procedure?

A mommy makeover may include a tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast augmentation and lift. During a tummy tuck, excess skin on the abdomen is removed and the underlying muscles are tightened for the patient to regain a flatter abdomen. Liposuction removes small fat deposits from certain parts of the body to improve body contour. Breast surgery is done to replace lost breast volume and tighten sagging breast skin.

How Long Does a Mommy Makeover Surgery Take?

Although the procedure can vary, it typically involves augmentation and a lift of the breasts as well as a tummy tuck and lipo. Of course, the duration of your particular mommy makeover will depend on which procedures you choose to have. The actual surgery can take from as little as four hours to as many as eight. Dr. Kearney will discuss this with you during your consultation.

What Can I Expect Post-Procedure and What is the Recovery Time?

Beyond the obvious bandages, expect your incisions to have surgical drains to allow blood and fluids to exit the surgical sites. You will need to wear compression garments to reduce swelling and help the skin adhere to its new contours. Your swelling can be last for weeks to months after surgery.

One nice feature of a mommy makeover is that despite having multiple procedures performed, you will only have one recovery period. The first week of recovery can be intense. However, this should not stop you from walking one day after your surgery. This helps promote circulation to the surgery sites. Dr. Kearney will prescribe pain medications to address any discomfort you may have.

How Long After Having My Last Child Do I Need to Wait Before Having a Mommy Makeover?

There are a couple of parameters involved with the timing of a mommy makeover: breast size and body weight. Dr. Kearney requires his mommy makeover patients to have finished breastfeeding for at least two to three months or until your breasts have returned to their natural size and you are no longer producing milk. Patients also need to have lost the majority of their baby weight. You should be within 10-15 pounds of your ideal weight, as a mommy makeover is not a weight-loss procedure. It’s also a good idea to be on a regular exercise routine, as this will make your recovery easier and ensure you’ll enjoy your results for the duration.

If I’m Still Breastfeeding, When Can I Have a Mommy Makeover?

Breastfeeding and a mommy makeover don’t go together. Patients’ breasts are larger than normal during breastfeeding, so surgery is not an option at that time. Patients generally need to be finished breastfeeding for at least two to three months prior to having a mommy makeover.

If I Plan on Having More Children, Can I Still Have a Mommy Makeover Now?

If you know that you want to have additional children, or even if you aren’t quite sure you are finished, you shouldn’t have a mommy makeover. Future pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can impair the results of your mommy makeover. This is something to consider very seriously prior to planning for a mommy makeover.

Why is it Best to Have These Procedures Combined into One Surgery?

While recovery after the various procedures in a mommy makeover takes time, you need to remember that it still is just a single recovery. Should you instead opt to have a breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction as separate procedures, you will have three separate recovery periods. Yes, your first week after your mommy makeover will not be easy, but one recovery sure beats three.

Will Insurance Cover a Mommy Makeover?

The procedures involved in a mommy makeover are considered to be elective, so insurance does not cover them. Dr. Kearney offers various payment plans, however, which you can discuss with a patient coordinator during your consultation.
