What is Morpheus8?
Morpheus8 is the most advanced fractional radio-frequency treatment available to treat aging skin by reducing wrinkles and rebuilding collagen. It delivers RF (radio-frequency) energy through a handheld device with small pins that create tiny punctures in the skin and send heat below the surface of the skin. The Morpheus8 doesn’t just address superficial tissue; it also directs energy to the underlying layers of the dermis. By targeting these deeper layers in a controlled way, it’s able to revitalize the collagen which results in skin tightening and improved texture. Difficult to treat areas like fatty necks and jowls can be contoured non-surgically.
Commonly treated areas include the face, neck, and chest but any area of the body that exhibits wrinkles or acne scarring is suitable for treatment.
What Areas Can I Have Treated with Morpheus8?
Because Morpheus8 features microneedles that can be adjusted at various depths up to 4mm, it can be used just about anywhere on the face, neck, and body. For areas with thinner skin, such as the forehead, we simply reduce the penetration depth. We use Morpheus8 on areas you’d never think of treating with laser energy, such as the delicate tissues around the mouth and the upper and lower eyelids.
Here are specific areas we treat at Dr. Kearney’s:
- Entire face
- Areas with stretchmarks
- Post-surgical scars

Are Morpheus8 Treatments Painful?
When you come into our beautiful La Jolla offices, we first apply a topical numbing anesthetic cream to the areas you will be having treated. This takes an hour or so to fully take effect. This ensures you are completely comfortable during these treatments.
How Does Morpheus8 Work?
The Morpheus8 handpiece delivers typical microneedling through the microneedles in the handpiece, but the penetration depth of these needles is sufficient enough to enter the dermis layer of the skin (up to 4mm). When the needles reach their target depth, the tips deliver a pulse of RF energy. This energy heats the dermis. When the body senses heat in the dermis layer, it assumes there has been a wound, so it initiates a wound-healing response. This involves remodeling all existing collagen in the area and then beginning the production of new collagen. Since collagen provides the skin’s structural support latticework, this instantly tightens the skin and then the increased collagen continues to build your results.
How Long Does a Morpheus8 Treatment Take?
A Morpheus8 treatment with Dr. Kearney takes anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. You’ll need to allow for an extra hour for the topical numbing anesthetic to fully numb your skin.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
While some patients only require 1 treatment, many patients will see the best results with 2-3 treatments spaced approximately 4-6 weeks apart. Visible results are typically seen 2-4 weeks after the procedure but collagen production can continue to improve for up to 6 months following the treatment.
What is the Recovery Like for Morpheus8 Treatments?
Your skin will be red, and you’ll likely have some mild swelling immediately after your Morpheus8 treatment. Your skin in the treated areas will feel tight and maybe a little shiny for 3-5 days. At the sites of the hundreds of microscopic punctures, you may have small, flaky scabs and some light peeling skin.
Bruising is possible but not common. Make-up can be applied 1-2 days after the procedure and normal activities can be resumed the day after treatment. Patients should moisturize the treatment area and avoid direct sun exposure. You will need to protect your skin with 30+ SPF sunscreen or just avoid the sun for a couple of weeks, as it will be susceptible to UV radiation. Most patients can return to work the next day. It’s a good treatment to have in the afternoon so that your skin can calm down overnight.
What Our Patients Have to Say
"“As soon as I took the first step toward my procedure, Katy went above and beyond. And every interaction I had with the rest of the team was on the same level as my experience with Dr. Kearney and Katy. The day of my procedure went flawlessly. I had my usual nerves, considering I had never had any type of surgery before, but there wasn’t any more fear or anxiety than that. It’s now two weeks since my surgery and I am so pleased with the results already, and my post-opp experiences with Doctor and the team. If you are in the process of considering a doctor for a procedure, I cannot stress enough that this is the Doctor and team to go with!”"
How Long Does it Take to See Results From Morpheus8?
Your results aren’t instant. You’ll have some redness and slight swelling across the treatment areas. From there, your skin will have a glow, but this is somewhat due to the initial response to the microneedles. The real results from Morpheus8 begin to show as the body begins producing new collagen to heal the wounds, despite the fact that they actually heal in just a couple hours. You’ll see visible contouring and skin texture changes in 2-4 weeks, as your skin begins to look smoother and firmer with more even tone and a brighter overall complexion. From there, the increase in collagen production will continue for as long as 6 months.
