The Marine Layer is Gone, but Unwanted Fat Stayed

June Gloom or whatever you call the cool cloudiness of June and July in La Jolla and coastal San Diego is a welcome respite from the 100-degree temperatures found inland. Now we’re past those cloud banks in September and it’s time to hit the beach or the pool.

That’s where another sort of chilling can come in handy for our San Diego patients. CoolSculpting. Despite taking the aesthetic world by storm just a decade ago in 2010, some people now think CoolSculpting is almost passé. They think the fat freezing coolness of CoolSculpting has been passed by competing treatments such as Vanquish and SculpSure.

Dr. Kearney begs to differ. He feels CoolSculpting remains the best non-invasive body contouring treatment out there. Here’s why.

CoolSculpting versus Vanquish

Instead of freezing the fat cells, Vanquish uses radiofrequency energy to heat and destroy them. The cells are then cleared by the body’s lymphatic system, just as with CoolSculpting. Both remove between 20-25 percent of the fat in the treatment areas.

The difference is the applicators. With Vanquish, the device is larger, and the patient lies under it, and the panels wrap around the entire abdomen. CoolSculpting has larger applicator panels along with smaller CoolMini panels, so it has more flexibility to treat smaller areas, such as the jowls or bra line fat. Vanquish cannot adapt to smaller areas.

Also, patients with metal in their bodies, such as artificial joints, fusion rods, or pacemakers, cannot have Vanquish due to the radiofrequency energy used.

CoolSculpting versus SculpSure

Like Vanquish, SculpSure uses heat to kill fat cells. SculpSure’s vehicle is laser energy. SculpSure uses four applicators that can be lined up or stacked to deliver the laser energy. As with Vanquish, SculpSure (although it does have the stacking flexibility that Vanquish doesn’t) cannot adapt to smaller areas in the same way CoolSculpting can. That’s why CoolSculpting has been approved to treat eight different body areas by the FDA, while SculpSure has only been approved for the stomach, love handles, back, thighs, and double chins.

Are you interested in getting rid of up to 25 percent of your unwanted fat on these areas: abdomen, thighs, back fat, bra line fat, flanks, underneath the buttocks, double chin, and upper arms? Call Dr. Kearney at (858) 677-9352 to set up a CoolSculpting consultation.
