How About Some Holiday Needling?

Although this year’s holiday season won’t likely be the usual free-for-all of parties and get togethers thanks to this dumb virus, at least most of us will still get together with extended family. And within those ranks there are sure to be some expert needlers, giving us the business about our new hairstyle or our Christmas sweater.

While their utterances can be amusing, there is another type of needling that is actually beneficial — microneedling at Dr. Kearney’s.

At our San Diego practice we use the Rejuvapen microneedling system for treatment of wrinkles and scars. The procedure is technically called percutaneous collagen induction therapy.

How does microneedling work?

The concept behind microneedling is to create a response in the body that is the same as when the body receives a wound. When the skin is injured the body rapidly gets to work repairing it. In addition to the platelets that close the wound off from any more blood loss, the body is also rebuilding the skin by producing new collagen and elastin for the area. Collagen is responsible for the skin’s support, keeping it firm and tight. Elastin makes the skin supple.

In Rejuvapen microneedling, 12 tiny needles are located in the tip of the microneedling pen. When used over the target area, the needles produce microscopic holes/channels down into the skin. These heal in just a few hours, but the body perceives them as injuries and elevates collagen and elastin production in the area to compensate.

This has two benefits. First, it stimulates the healing response. Second, these short-lived channels down into the skin are great for the application of topical gels and creams to penetrate below the surface of the skin. We apply those immediately after your microneedling.

What do we treat with microneedling?

  • Fine lines and deep wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, and forehead
  • Deep lines and crepe-like texture across the face can be firmed
  • Coarse, sun-damaged skin
  • Acne, burn, and surgical scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Overly large pores

We use a topical numbing cream prior to your treatment, so you feel no pain. And your recovery is minimal.

Our office is now open!

Your health (and ours) is our highest priority so we are making a few changes to our reopening so that you can feel safe and confident coming in to see us. We are of course following all federal and local guidelines such as wearing masks and conducting phone screenings prior to your appointment but we are also implementing the following:

Increasing the frequency of cleaning and sterilization to not only include exam rooms but also the waiting room, restroom, all doors, counters, etc.

Offering multiple hand sanitizer locations throughout the office

Reducing the number of appointments per day as well as our office hours, to limit the number of people in the office, including staff members

Minimizing patient overlap to allow for proper social distancing

Testing all surgery patients for COVID-19 at their pre-operative appointments

Asking patients to leave family members or friends at home, unless they are coming with their primary caregiver. Please leave children at home as well

How can you help?

Come alone to your appointment, unless you need your primary caregiver with you

Please wear a mask or face covering to your visit and keep it on unless you are asked by Dr. Kearney or an RN to remove it

Postpone your visit if you have traveled by air or experienced symptoms in the last 14 days

Use a pen from the holder marked “clean” and put it in the one marked “used” when you’re done

Use the hand sanitizers in our office

In the rare case there is someone at the front desk when you come in please take a seat until we call you and maintain proper distance throughout your visit

Take advantage of our virtual consultations or follow up appointments if it makes you feel more comfortable

Please bear with us as we work to return to our new “normal” and feel free to call or email with any questions. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kearney and staff
