Did you find yourself cursing repeatedly this summer in San Diego when you tried to tame the hair on your bikini line or underarms in preparation for weekend out at Mission Beach? Shaving, plucking, waxing — it’s an endless cycle of annoyance and irritated skin.
Now that we’re entering our “winter” of sorts here in Southern California, now is a great time to come see us at Dr. Kearney’s to have us put our Diolaze XL laser on the task of getting rid of your unwanted hair permanently.
How do lasers remove hair?
People sometimes think of lasers and hair removal as more of a sci-fi thing. You know, zapping the hair like a Stormtrooper in a Star Wars movie. Uh, no. Lasers remove hair through a simple vehicle — heat. When you come into our comfortable offices in the Chandler Park complex for laser hair removal, we first look at the color of your hair you want removed. We set the wavelength for our Diolaze XL laser light to match the color of that hair. We then deliver short pulses of laser light down onto your skin and the hairs in the area. The melanin in the hair absorbs the laser light, and the light energy instantly converts to heat. This heat travels down the hair shaft into the follicle holding the hair. The heat damages or destroys the follicle, preventing it from growing hair in the future.
The cycle is key
People wonder why you need multiple laser hair removal sessions. This is because of the hair growth cycle. Humans have around five million hair follicles on our bodies, with men having a few hundred thousand more than women. Each of those five million follicles operates like a free agent, meaning each is independent of the others. For laser energy to effectively destroy or damage a hair follicle, the hair needs to be in the growth cycle of the hair lifespan. The problem is, the hair can be in the growth, transitional, or resting phases; there’s no guarantee how many hairs in the treatment area will be in the growth phase. During the transition and resting phases, laser energy has no effect on the hair follicle because the body is already in the process of shedding the hair, so it is not actively anchored in the follicle. For the laser energy to damage the follicle, the hair has to be in the growth cycle.
Now you see why it takes multiple appointments to remove more and more hair — we have to try and catch the hairs in the correct phase. Plus, sometimes when a follicle is only partially damaged, it can heal and begin growing hair again.
