CoolSculpting Questions

CoolSculptingMost people who follow the aesthetic industry know about CoolSculpting, a revolutionary way to permanently remove fat without surgery. CoolSculpting is one of our more popular procedures at Dr. Kearney’s, so we’ll address a few questions about the procedure in this blog.

What is CoolSculpting?

First, what is it? CoolSculpting was an accidental discovery by two Harvard scientists. They were studying why children seemed to develop dimples in their cheeks after they ate popsicles. Their theory was that the cold temperatures somehow affected the fat in the cheeks of the children. Less fat equaled dimples. Their theory proved true, as the cooling actually killed the fat cells. From there, they wondered if that same process could kill fat cells elsewhere. The result? CoolSculpting.

CoolSculpting uses the principle that fat cells freeze and die at a higher temperature than the surrounding tissue cells. The CoolSculpting equipment delivers cooling downward into the skin under the machine’s cooling panels. This cooling freezes the fat cells, but leaves adjacent cells undamaged. The body then absorbs and otherwise removes the dead fat cells over the next few weeks. And those fat cells are gone for good. A CoolSculpting session generally kills 20% of the fat cells in the target area.

Would CoolSculpting be right for me?

Fat pockets. That’s the important thing with CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting is designed to address fat pockets that won’t go away with changes in diet or exercise. It is not a weight loss procedure; CoolSculpting is, basically, a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

Where do the fat cells go?

Once the fat cells in the target area are frozen (crystallized), your body flushes them out through the lymphatic system.

What does CoolSculpting feel like?

During the first few minutes of your treatment you’ll feel intense cold on the treatment area, but this quickly dissipates. People read, watch videos, work on their laptops, even take a nap during their treatments.

Can I do normal stuff afterwards?

Patients return to their normal activities right after their CoolSculpting session. It’s completely non-invasive.

When will I see results?

Your body will be flushing out the dead fat cells for up to six months after your treatment, so your results will continue improving. Most patients start seeing results in a little as three weeks, with the most dramatic results coming after around two months.
