Getting a Nose You Like

Nose Surgery, San Diego, CA After our eyes, our nose is the focal point of the face. Many people have hated the appearance of their nose since their teenage years. Others have always struggled with breathing due to congenital issues with function.

Dr. Kearney has extensive experience with this delicate cosmetic surgery. This month in our two blogs we’ll talk about nose surgery, some history, how it’s done, and why it could be a great procedure for you.

Long history

Nose surgery, clinically termed rhinoplasty, is nothing new. Ancient Egyptian medical texts mention surgical treatments to repair a broken nose way back in 3000 BC. The surgery became more clinical and documented in India around 500 BC when the physician Sushruta developed and applied plastic surgery techniques for reconstructing noses that were amputated as religious, criminal, or military punishment. Sushruta developed the basic technique of forehead flap rhinoplasty that is still used today

A little more to the present, the first closed rhinoplasty was performed in 1887 by John Orlando Roe to correct what was termed a “pug nose.” A. Rethi introduced the open method, where a small incision is made to the columella, the area of skin between the nostrils at the nose bottom, in 1921.

Year in and year out, rhinoplasty continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures.

Should you have nose surgery?

Really, anyone unhappy with his or her nose is a good candidate for nose surgery with Dr. Kearney. He has extensive experience with this procedure and can make modifications to match your goals. Noses may be made more narrow, straighter, longer or shorter. Humps can be removed from the bridge. The tip can be changed in different ways: the shape, size, angle, and definition.

Here are some things to consider when thinking about nose surgery:

Your nose appears too large compared to your face

When viewed in profile, there is a bump on the bridge

The tip of your nose droops or is enlarged

Your nostrils are overly flared

How old do you have to be?

It’s important for teens considering this surgery to understand that their nose and entire face need to be finished growing before rhinoplasty with Dr. Kearney can be performed. For women, this occurs around the ages of 15-16. For men, it’s a bit later, at 16-17.
